How Do I Keep My Shower Curtain From Blowing In?

If you also hate that feeling when the shower curtain tries to attack you, there are luckily ways to prevent this.

1. If you are buying a new shower curtain, buy as heavy one as possible. If you have just bought one that is doing it to you, see if there’s anything heavy you could attach to the bottom. How about outdoor tablecloth weights?

2. Use suction cups, shower curtain clips and magnets. Magnets will only work if your tub is made of metal though.

3. Try to hang the curtain further away.

4. If you have a bathtub, some people recommend holding the curtain in place with your shampoo bottles.

Wash It Every Few Weeks

To prevent mildew and stains, you should really wash your shower curtain every few weeks, minimum once a month. Study by SafeHome found out that an average shower curtain can harbor 60 x times more bacteria than your toilet seat. Yikes! Get a shower spray to spray the curtain in between the washes.
(By the way, the study also found out that even toothbrush handle has more bacteria on it than toilet seat. You are welcome.)

Get a Washable Liner

Get a shower liner made of waterproof fabric. Not only will it look better but it is also washable so you can save money and reduce waste. If you consistently wash it with the curtain there shouldn’t be any mildew problems, but if they do occur, try baking soda and vinegar, with the toughest stains you can try bleach.

Shorten the Curtain If Needed

While an average shower curtain size is 70 x 70 or 70 x 72 inches, it isn’t a fit for all. Make sure there are at least a couple of inches space between the floor and the curtain to prevent mildew.

Wash The Curtain In A Salt Water

They say that washing your shower curtain in salt water before using it helps preventing mold and mildew. Add warm water to a tub, dissolve two cups of salt and add your curtain. Let soak for a few hours and then let it dry completely.

Design Tips

Pay Attention to Detail

Updating your shower curtain is one of the quickest and easiest ways to update the look of the whole room. While you can find plenty of beautiful designs in shops, some of the most sophisticated looking ones are with some special details like the macrame shower curtain below by Urban Outfitters.

Hang It Higher

Same trick that works with window coverings works in the bathroom too. Hang your curtain higher to give an impression of higher ceilings.

Forget Plastic Rings

Everything plasticky makes the space look cheap and curtain rings are no exception. Go for metallic ones or rings painted with metallic paint – match the finish to the other fixtures in the room.

You could also use decorative ribbon or rope instead of rings or look out for a ringless shower curtain.

Do your shower rings squeak when pulled across? Just rub some petroleum jelly on the rod and the squeak is gone.
